Zhang Daqian Dunhuang - Fresco Copy Paintings Exhibition

From 1941 t0 1943, Zhang Daqian launched an expedition to Dunhuang and worked on more than 270 copies of Dunhuang murals. The experience in Dunhuang had played a critical role in Zhang Daqian's career. He absorbed a large amount of painting essences from Northern Dynasties to Five Dynasties, abandoned the weak and narrow literary style of the late Qing Dynasty, broadened his horizon and lightened the vigor. His techniques, painting style and painting ideas underwent a huge transformation, laying the foundation for his later splash-ink painting style. His experience made him great master.

The exhibition brings 60 Zhang Daqian’s copy paintings divided in five sections: Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Devas, Donors, and Ceilings.
