As a quite unique nomadic people galloping across northern grasslands of ancient China and the founder of Liao Empire, the Khitan represented their culture and were among those that politically united small states in ancient northern China. Grasslands civilization entered into a higher developing stage with the policy of “Administration under the Custom” and inclusiveness.

Innumerable cultural relics of Liao Dynasty have been unearthed in Inner Mongolia where the Khitan used to live. Among them, there are some astounding discoveries in archaeology worldwide: Yelv Yvzhi Tomb, Liao Tomb on Turki Hill and the Tomb of the Princess of Chen State. With the remarkable regional and ethnical features, these cultural relics are a microcosm of Khitan social life and eyewitness the close relations between Liao Empire and some ethnic groups in politics, economy and culture.

This exhibition is mainly composed of four parts: Ethnic Origin Legends, Grasslands Empire, Seeking Dreams in Heaven, and Recreation and Entertainment, demonstrating the cultural features and style, cultural decrees and regulations in Liao Empire. The Liao used to rule Northern China for some 200 years and exist with North Song Dynasty and Xixia Kingdom in the same period. Therefore, the majestic appearance of the Liao and unique Khitan culture can be better appreciated.
